Matt Miland Finishes 19th at Border Clash

This year was the 10th running of the Nike Border Clash, which features the top 40 runners from Washington and the top 40 runners from Oregon.  The race is held in Beaverton, Oregon on the Nike World Headquarters campus.  To qualify for this race, you have to finish in the top 10 of the 3A race at the state meet.

Matt Miland ran an awesome race.  He went out hard and put himself in good position by avoiding the worst of the pack.  Then he just raced the people around him.  He ended up finishing 19th out of the 80 runners in the field.  Only two Oregon runners beat him.  One was the 5A state champion and the other was 3rd in the 4A state meet.  Washington runners were the top 14 places, and 18 of the top 20.

Other Lindbergh runners to compete at the Border Clash meet were:  Habtamu Aregaw 1999 (25th place), Sam Ahlbeck 2003 (34th place), Sam Ahlbeck 2004 (11th place), Chris Miland 2005 (51st place), Trevor Thompson 2007 (62nd place), and Matt Miland 2008 (19th place).

Great Job Matt!

9th Place at Nike Northwest Regionals

Today the Lindbergh boys competed in the Nike Team Regional race in Boise, Idaho.  The best teams of all classifications in the entire Northwest region (which includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and Hawaii) competed at this meet.  Two teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation and 4 teams ranked in the top 20 in the nation ran in the race.  Lindbergh finished 9th place overall, which means that we are the ninth best team out of the 6 states in the Northwest!

The weather was beautiful–sunny and about 55 degrees.  The course was scenic and fun to run on.  The race was crazy, however, because the course of too narrow for the number of runners in the race.  It looked like a combination of Greco-Roman wrestling, rugby, and cross country all in one.  This meant that though the course was reasonably fast, unless you were in the lead pack of about 10 people, you got stuck in a massive crowd.  There were also at least three very sharp turns in the course, which slowed things down a great deal with so many people in the race.

Our times were:  Trevor 16:05, Matt  16:09, Joseph 16:48, James 17:17, Nate R. 17:24, Nate T. 17:27, Thanh  17:50

The top 10 teams were:  North Central, Jesuit, Seattle Prep, Jackson, Boise, Mead, Crater, Ferris, Lindbergh, and Stark Street

4th at State

The Lindbergh boys team finished a best-ever 4th at the state meet in Pasco this weekend in a race that was perhaps the most competitive in the past 20 years.  North Central, the first place team with 24 points, is the #1 ranked team in the United States.  Seattle Prep, the second place team, would have easily been the state champions any other year with the times they ran.  The top 14 individuals all ran times that were faster than last year's state champion.  And the 3A race was more competitive than the 4A race for the first time that I can remember.   Considering all of these factors, finishing fourth place is especially impressive.  We didn't run the best race of the year (if we did, we could have been 3rd), but we ran well enough to bring home a trophy for the first time in the history of Lindbergh cross country.

Matt Miland finished in 10th place, ran a PR, and qualified for the Nike Border Clash race in two weeks.  Thanh Nguyen ran the race of the day, running 17:07–a huge PR–and out-kicking several runners in the final 200 meters.

After a fabulous season, Sarah Reiter unfortunately had a disappointing state meet.  After going out in a perfect position the first mile (in 15th place and looking good), she pulled her calf muscle and had to limp through the final two miles.
