In track, he was the best in the state and still holds the Washington State 800m record. He placed 3rd nationally his Senior year and broke the 25-year-old state mark of 1:50.4 set by Greg Gibson of Connell in 1972.

John went on to run for Washington State University on a full ride scholarship for a couple years.
